Lively start .... lots of laughter
A great start to Bremer Forum's year - thanks to President, Leanne and the sharp minds and wit of our diverse group of members. Lots of laughter. Appreciated the wisdom shared in the prepared speeches to The Getting of Wisdom... . We all met the challenge to develop our critical listening skills ...as Assessors - and, according to some, all that was missing was the red wine for our informal Table Talk.. on the question of 'Loss of wisdom from the workforce'. Thoroughly enjoyed it ... but really missed the members who couldn't make it. Well done everyone!

Meeting Tuesday
Are you all ready for a challenging and life enriching 6 month session? Our journey starts on Tuesday with all members speaking for 3-5 mins on 'The Getting of Wisdom'. As we have no visiting Assessor lined up for this meeting, we will be doing a group analysis. I am presenting our first segments from the 'Brilliant Public Speaking Course' - Purpose, Benefits, and Content' - and will facilitate our first 'Table Talk' segment. This is basically impromptu speaking in the more informal environment of, say, a dinner table or board room. I'll give you a hint, we'll be discussing the way forward for education, e.g., autonomy of principals to hire and fire whom they wish, (negatives and positives), the impact of NAPLAN, and more.
So come along and be entertained, upskilled and educated in important communication skills.

Bremer Forum Calendar
So what's new this week?
Well we now have our very own calendar online, because if your grey matter is as bad as mine you will need a little help from time to time.
Just click on the link above the posts and it will take you there. That's right, just move your eyes up the page a bit and it's beside the Facebook link.
I must admit it does look rather empty but as the weeks progress I'm sure our dance card will fill up.

Ready . . . Set . . . .
Following are the speaking opportunities available to all
members if they’re up for it!
·
·
A chairman for each meeting, who brings a wise
quote or saying to open the meeting.
·
One person each meeting to speak for 3-5 mins to
‘Great Speeches of Our Time’.
·
One person to facilitate ‘Table Talk’ – this is
an extension of the ‘point of view’ concept. We will be taking this
skill further by pretending we are expressing a point of view in the
board/meeting room or around a dinner table
·
All members to speak on 2 occasions – ‘The
Getting of Wisdom’, and ‘The 7 Wonders of the World’
·
Symposium speakers for ‘The Good Life’ (from a
global perspective). Q & A to follow.
·
Debate speakers x 6 – ‘Australia Should Become a
Republic Nation’.
· Impromptu Speaking Competition
·
Follow-up 5 min speeches to follow our 3 X 10
minute speakers – titles are ‘Jackanory’, ‘Big Apple’, and ‘Behind the Words’
·
Impromptu Votes of Thanks – I’ll provide a proforma to guide you, with the aim that you will be able to do it without notes.
If this seems overwhelming, remember, you don’t have to
do anything you don’t want to do! I’m just creating the opportunities for you to hone your confidence and presentation skills.

At last..... 2014 session is coming
Hi everyone... I am pleased we are about to start our meetings again. I get withdrawals when there are only 3 weeks between meetings. Looking forward to seeing everyone at Bremer Forum next Tuesday night. Looks like President Leanne has a great session ahead for us.

Eight Days To Go
It seems like ages since any funny things happened on the way to the Forum. While it's been nice to catch up with Forum Buddies over the break, I'm looking forward to hearing your wonderful speeches and receiving feedback on mine.
Incoming President Leanne has planned a wonderful programme, with innovative components such as analysing some of the truly great speeches of our time. Can't wait for my turn. You may have guessed that, being a devotee of popular culture, I have chosen a cinematic speech. No, not Michael Douglas's press-conference speech at the end of The American President - I spoke about that one a couple of years back. You'll just have to wait until March the 11th. So eight sleeps my fine feathered Forum friends. . . .
